TWILIGHT: GODS
A parking garage opera performance

PROJECT DURATION

August 2020

ROLE

Illustration

Covid-19 has created new obstacles for in-person performances, especially those involving singing and projecting vocals indoors. Michigan Opera Theatre’s new artistic director, Yuval Sharon, is beginning his tenure with an innovative and safe opera performance. Using the theatre’s parking garage, attendees will have a drive-in experience of the opera, with each parking level depicting scenes of the Wagner adaptation.

The imagery for the illustration includes iconography from the performance – fire, horses, a golden ring, and rivers – moving throughout a multi-level garage structure filled with familiar parking imagery such as stencil typography, directional arrows, and signage.

Project Goals

  • Balance conceptual imagery from the title show “Twilight: Gods”, while also capturing elements of the unique performance experience

  • Make opera feel approachable, hip, and inclusive for the Detroit audience, while still being refined

  • Create imagery that can be used across multiple sizes and platforms; from online banner ads to billboards
